Damon Fowler, Ringside Cafe, Friday and Saturday 2/6 2/7

The Damon Fowler Group played Friday and Saturday at the Ringside in St. Peterburg, FL. I was lucky to have experienced both rockin' shows.
Saturday I had a lot of fun with Fritz, Scott, and Liz. I'm happy they made it to the show and eventually we had a full table of friends hanging out....dancing.... etc. fun fun fun
Kat...Next time baby... you are THERE :)

Damon, Chuck (bass), Scott (drums).

Damon allows other musicians to sit in and play a song or two. Friday ..wowzer... the Sauce Boss Bill Wharton was in da house! He's a jammer. When you see that he is in your town... go to the show. Not only will you hear and experience some great music you will also get to sample Bill's gumbo that has been cooking during the evening.

Pirates, Beads, Cannons, WATCH OUT

Every year in Tampa Jose Gaspar the pirate invades Tampa demands the key to Tampa from the mayor. This has been going on for years - truly - YEARS - and gets bigger and better every time. The events span over a 5-6 week period with a few parades, a distance classic run that brings competition from around the world as well as 100s from Tampa, a fine art show, and who knows what else.

Well, yesterday was the actual pirate invasion and this year I was fortunate to witness it from the Coast Guard base. Ryan is in the CG and the Egals invited me to come hang out with them. Last year I went to the big parade with Joni and that was a lot of fun. I had a ticket to do that again but decided to see if it could be sold so I could go to the CG.

The CG had food and drinks as well as a few play areas for the kids. Ronan loved the huge blow-up boucy thingy. I had some pics of the kids in that thing but I think they may have gotten deleted. If I find the pics, I will add them later.

Here is Ronan sitting on my lap waiting for the Pirate Shiii to arrive. Meanwhile helicopters flew over head (look she-ee, look) and cannons boomed around (ooohh boom). Occasionally a boat would approach the sea wall and toss some beads our way.

Then, the parade started. The nuggets took the opportunity to see most of it from a higher vantaage point. What a beautiful family. (picture removed due to someone saying they looked terrible in it) LOL

Tracy May and the start of his bead collection. Maybe Tracy will share some of his pictures. If so, I'll post them later.

Ashlynn and Riley after a few more boats had passed. Beads! Beads! Over here, Over here! Those phrases were shouted and beads were tossed.

Jose Gaspar's pirate ship - the focal point of the boat parade. Other Krewes have boats as well and they were not far away. After the ship and boats dock, the krewe members head to their floats and the street parade starts a couple of hours later.

Not sure what this is all about but she wanted me to delete this pic. I think this is the first time I didn't do what Riley asked! I like this pic!
Ronan after a loud cannon BOOM.
More boats.

Ronan was just a little tired after the day.

Short and shaky video of some of the boats passing by.

Recap of the last few days and going forward a little

It all started a little over a week ago on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 when Damon's CD was officially released. That was also dinner night with the Egal family. After dinner was done and everything cleaned and put away, Tracy and I raced over to see Damon and buy the new CD.
Then the fun began.
Friday 1/29: party at Skipper's for Damon. (blogged)
Saturday: Lunch with BFF Pam at Estella's
Sunday: Superbowl at the Pittman's with a pit stop at O'Briens
Monday: Class at USF.
Tuesday: Dinner with the Egal's at their home and I took Emily too. Later, O'Death and Hex Tremors at the Orpheum in Ybor. (Blogged)
Wednesday: Richard Gilewitz and John Hammond at Ace's Music in Bradenton, FL
Thursday: Hex Tremors, O'Death, Token Gamblers, and one other band at BackBooth in Orlando.
Friday: Damon Fowler Group at Ringside Cafe, St. Petersburg, FL (to be blogged soon)
Saturday morning/noon: Gasparilla Pirate Invasion, Tampa, FL (to be blogged soon)
Saturday late afternoon: 2 hour nap
Saturday night: Damon Fowler Group at Ringside Cafe with a table full of fun and friends. We danced, we sang, we tried to be quiet while Damon was having his 'o' moments and also to ensure that Fritz will join me again at a show. I think I did ok with the 'shelley be quiet' stuff.
Sunday: Well, today hasn't happened yet BUT the plans are to go to orlando to see Reckless Kelly. Maybe even do something before the show. But first I need to take the cutest dog in the world to the park and catch a few more zzzzs.
Monday: Is it going to be Monday already? If so, I have class on Monday night.
Tuesday: Reckless Kelly at Skipper's Smokehouse
Wednesday: Old Crow Medicine Show at the Historic Tampa Theatre. Usher night for me.
Thursday: WHAT???? nothing scheduled?
Friday: NO WAY??? Maybe it is too early to post this but I can't believe there is nothing on the books...yet.
Saturday: Eric and Nicole's wedding
Sunday: May I rest today? Well, maybe after doing some Greyhound Cat testing with Daisy in the morning. Oh yeah, I'm scheduled for brunch with the girls at Oystercatcher's at 1130. Sunday is toast too.... I need a designated driver because I love mimosas. Guess I'll rest Sunday late afternoon.

O'Death at the Orpheum in Ybor and again at BackBooth in Orlando

Twice in one week. Wow. I heard about this band on mnf the other day and decided to check them out in Tampa. They amazed me so the decision was made to go see them again in Orlando. They are from New York and don't get to Florida much and I feel lucky to have had the chance to see them not just once, but twice. I can't really describe them...the words escape me. From the first song to the last they rock the place. The videos don't do them justice. You have to see them LIVE. Sometimes they start out slow and sometimes...well, you'll just have to go to their show someday. One song in the clothes start coming off. woo hoo Not mine silly, theirs. Just their shirts...dang, get your mind outta the gutter.

There was another band at the Orpheum Tuesday. The Hex Tremors blew me away. Two guys...so much energy... They are based in Orlando and opened for O'Death on Thursday night as well. This video is a jam of the Hex Trimmers with O'Death...and it is rockin'.

Thursday at BackBooth there were two other bands. The Token Gamblers were rockin' bluegrass and I really enjoyed watching those musicians too. Since they are from Orlando I should have the chance to see them again someday.

The real photographer was there too and maybe after he gets his photos processed I can post a few here. smile

Richard Gilewitz and John Hammond at Ace's Music, Bradenton, FL

On one of the coldest nights in years, Ace's Music was steaming hot with music from Richard Gilewitz and John Hammond.
I did not get a decent pic of Richard but I did capture three incredible videos of him playing his style. The videos are on You Tube. Search his name and you should be able to find them. Read more about Richard here:
Here are my videos of Richard:
John told wonderful stories (bonehead me should have recorded those...dang) before each song. He has a great history of playing with folks all over the world. Learn more about John here:

I posted many videos of John on You Tube. Songs by Howlin' Wolf, Skip James, Robert Johnson, and of course some of his own as well.
John Hammond
My John Hammond videos on you tube:

Damon said his eyes weren't blinking, they were flashing little hearts for this pic. ha ha
I'm freaking scary looking in this shot. dang.

https://photocontest.humanesociety.org/contest.html?page=viewInd&id=3728&contestId=1

Yes, it costs money to vote. $1 for 1 vote. But, this is a worthy cause. Many of you know that I have spent 100s spaying and neutering wild cats in my neighborhood. It works! Trap, alter, and release. Help control the pet population. Have your (and all other) pets spayed or neutered. Have you heard that before? First Bob and now Drew. smile

Current Vote Amount for Dice and Elsie: 61 yippee

The cutest dog in the world with her favorite playmate Dice the amazing Greyhound.
